[:en]Online registration will close on Tuesday, 2 October. To register for a Saturday off-site activity, please visit Rebecca Litwack at the Registration and Information Desk at the Palace Hotel on Wednesday, 17 October at 12 p.m. on Wednesday and then daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The last day to register onsite is Friday, 19 October at 1:30 p.m.

Important: ONE off-site activity is included in the price of your University registration. These activities are open to members and their registered guests (full participation and limited participation). All off-site activities will take place on Saturday, 20 October 2018. The activities will depart from and return to the host hotel.

Please read these important notes about off-site activities before you register!

  • Registered members and their registered guests (full or limited participation) may sign-up for ONE (1) off-site activity per person.
  • All off-site activities include either breakfast or lunch, as listed in the descriptions below.
  • All off-site activities have limited space and are first come, first served.
  • Some activities are weather permitting and may be cancelled due to inclement weather.
  • All activities require a minimum number of people to participate and may be cancelled prior to the event if the minimum has not been met.
  • Some off-site activities may require a user-pay supplement and are indicated in the description.
  • All user-pay activities are non-refundable, unless EO cancels.
  • Members and guests that sign-up for the same activity will be assigned to the same group.
  • There are no wait-lists for sold out activities.
  • All events will depart from and return to the Palace Hotel. Please review departure and return times listed below before selecting an off-site activity.
  • Simultaneous interpretation will not be provided at any off-site activity.

*NEW* Sailing on the San Francisco Bay (9:30 a.m.)

There is no better way to experience the sites and sounds of the city by the Bay than from the bay! Groups may choose an adventurous heavy air sail under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Alcatraz, along the Skyline and see many of the most famous sites of San Francisco from the water! Or for those who seek less challenging conditions, groups may choose a relaxing cruise along Tiburon’s waterfront and across Raccoon Straight to the calm of Angel Island. Both tour groups will be sailing aboard beautifully maintained yachts of 30-40’ with a US Coast Guard licensed captain. Individuals are welcome to participate in as much or as little sailing as they want under the supervision of the captain. Guests will take in the sweeping views while dining on a decadent lunch during the tours.

ANGEL ISLAND HIKE

Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay offering expansive 360° views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin County Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. The island, a California Historical Landmark, has been used for a variety of purposes, including military forts, a US Public Health Service Quarantine Station, and a US Bureau of Immigration inspection and detention facility. The Angel Island Immigration Station, located on the northeast corner of the island, is where officials detained, inspected, and examined approximately one million immigrants and is now a designated a National Historic Landmark. This unique package includes water taxi pickup, followed by a 2 – 3.5 hour historical hike and delicious picnic on Angel Island. Following the picnic, guests will hop onboard for the return trip which offers breathtaking views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Biking the Golden Gate Bridge is a must-do adventure for guests visiting San Francisco. Experience this majestic landmark in a way which no other method can compare and see why bicycling is the best way to see San Francisco and Marin County.

You will start at Fisherman’s Wharf area and follow the bike path through the newly preserved Crissy Field, across the Golden Gate Bridge, and downhill to beautiful Sausalito. During the tour, guests will enjoy a Boxed Lunch picnic at Fort Baker.

GOCAR SCAVENGER HUNT

Are you sort of an “on own” adventurer type of person? Do you like going left when perhaps the majority of a group wants to go right? Well, this is the tour/experience for you! Hop into a GoCar and let this little yellow car take you (and a guest or colleague; they can fit two adults!) on a tour of San Francisco. Your clever talking car navigates and shows you the way. As you enjoy the drive, the GoCar takes you to all the best sites and shares the stories that bring this unique city to life. These cars are smart! An on-board computer and a GPS-system do all of the thinking so you can actually relax and take in this beautiful city. You can even elevate your experience by participating in the on board scavenger hunt! This scavenger hunt utilizes the car’s individually-issued tablets and during the tour, the system will prompt you with multiple-choice questions and picture and video challenges. Reporting from the tablets goes back to the GoCar offices and the teams are scored, but only one team can be the winner!

You’ll try bites from newer establishments, like the sustainable Jewish deli Wise Sons to the iconic Mexican eatery La Palma, a Mission staple since 1953. Shake up your usual food routine and try out-of-the-ordinary eats, such as Humphry Slocombe’s bourbon and cornflake ice cream. As an added bonus, you’ll learn the importance of some of the area’s most iconic murals from a docent from Precita Eyes, a local arts history institution. The Mission’s vibrant Latino 24th Street corridor is a bustling, busy business district that can feel intimidating if you don’t know where to go, but the guides – all local, award-winning food writers, restaurant workers, and chefs – know the food, the neighbors, and the community and help you feel right at home.

PARAGLIDING OVER SAN FRANSICO

Ever dreamed of flying? Paragliding in San Francisco offers fantastic tandem paragliding flights! No experience is needed to fly tandem. On the day of your flight, you will go through a short preflight briefing then, you will be clipped into a tandem harness with a fully USHPA qualified flight instructor. Together, you and your flight instructor will take off and you can sit back and enjoy the ride. The typical flight lasts around 20 to 30 minutes, but that’s not a hard time limit. Flight times vary and your instructor will usually fly until you are ready to land. Guests should wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes such as tennis shoes or hiking shoes. It’s also a good idea to bring a light jacket or windbreaker.

Hop on, hold on and enjoy the ride! You and your guests will enjoy the fresh air and freedom as your local guide takes you on a private tour along the waterfront and wharf, through the hills and into Golden Gate Park and Hippie Hill, all on a Segway! Once you arrive into the Haight, you will hop off and enjoy the Haight Ashbury Flower Power walking tour, which is your backstage pass to the coolest area in the universe! Stroll through the cosmic history of it all, from rock’n roll to art, fashion and architecture; this fantastic walking adventure gives you a real insight into the cosmic draw of the Haight-Ashbury!

The tour is approximately 60% hippy history and 40% general neighborhood history and architecture, but it’s always 100% “far-out” fun! Saunter along the same streets as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and countless others that etched their marks into the collective alternative culture and creativity of the 20th century. Lunch will be provided on this tour.

This Wine Country tour takes in the best of California’s world famous premium wine making region. The valleys of Napa and Sonoma lie 40 miles north of San Francisco and make up North America’s premium wine making region.
