Etiquette

For etiquette information, please reference:

Language

English is the official language of GLC.

Currency

The base currency in Germany is the Euro. Euro banknotes are issued in €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10, €5 notes. Denominations of Euro coins are €2, €1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c, and 1c. All Euro coins have a common side showing their value, while the national side shows an image chosen by each country. Euro coins from any member state are valid in all states throughout the Euro zone. The Euro notes, front and back side, are the same in all countries.

You can get money from a Geldautomat (“ATM,” or automated teller machine) at major train stations, airports, large shopping centers and in and outside banks. At ATMs, be sure to exercise caution by shielding your PIN and surveying your surroundings.

Foreign exchange booths are very common and clearly post their daily exchange rates. The Frankfurt has many locations where you can find ATMs, currency exchanges and tax-free services. Visit their website for a full list of locations.

Please note that some hotels will exchange a small amount of foreign currency, but the rate will usually be poor compared to those offered by banks or foreign-exchange booths. Please check with your hotel before leaving your home country.

Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted credit cards at most hotels, airlines, and upscale restaurants and merchants. It is recommended that you carry cash, as most local establishments and taxis may not take credit card. For information on tax-free shopping in Germany, visit this site.

Stay Connected

The country code for Germany is 49. When dialing a German number from abroad, be sure to dial 00 before the area code and number.

Plugs in Germany will look like this:
